1. What is the advantage of using College Movers over going to UPS directly?
Where UPS will only deliver or pickup from the front desk, receiving room, or front door...College Movers takes it to the next level. We will deliver and pickup directly from your room in your dorm, apartment, Sorority, Fraternity, or anywhere you live at school. [ Back to top]
2. I do not see my school on your list...can you still move me?
We are always looking to add new schools. Please e-mail us to inquire about adding your school. [ Back to top]
3. What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discovery, and American Express. [ Back to top]
4. How do I get the boxes to start packing?
When you sign up, you will purchase a moving kit. Each kit contains 6 boxes (24" x 18" x 16"), 1 roll of packing tape, and 1 black Sharpie Marker. Each moving kit is $30 plus shipping and handling, and will be shipped directly to your house. [ Back to top]
5. Can the $30 charge for the moving kit be applied to my shipping fees?
The cost of the kit is separate from the shipping fees. The cost for the shipping kit is a non-refundable charge and the kits cannot be returned. [ Back to top]
6. Can I pick up my boxes to avoid the fee to ship the moving kit out?
Yes, but only if you live in the Chicagoland area. When you order the kit, just click on the box that says "I will pick up my boxes." [ Back to top]
7. What if I have multiple children going to the same or different schools?
When you sign up for the moving kits, enter one child at a time. When you are finished, the site will ask you if you want to check out or sign up another child. When you come back to ship the boxes, you can choose which child you want to have boxes shipped to. [ Back to top]
8. How big are the boxes you supply?
Each box is 24" x 18" x 16". [ Back to top]
9. When is a good time to pack my boxes?
We could never tell you when it is a good time to pack, but please do not wait until the last minute. You will be rushing, and in turn forget something or pack things you do not need. [ Back to top]
10. Are there any items that we should not pack?
Do not pack jewelry, cash, liquids, or extremely fragile items. Anything you want to send that is fragile like electronics or small appliances should be packed in their original packaging. [ Back to top]
11. What is the proper way for me to label my boxes and other items?
Each box will be shipped to our holding area at your school via UPS. All UPS labels will be printed using our website, and will have a predetermined address on each label. Your school address will be in our database when you sign up, so there is no need to label your address on the box. If anything, we recommend writing the contents of your box for easy unpacking. [ Back to top]
12. Will College Movers pack or unpack for me?
Due to liability reasons, we will not pack or unpack for you. [ Back to top]
13. How should I pack my boxes?
Our boxes can hold almost anything you are going to bring to school. However, we STRONGLY recommend that you DO NOT over pack the boxes. We suggest that any valuable items (stereo, computer, television, microwave, etc.) be packed in their original box to insure proper protection. If you do not have the original packaging, you can use bubble wrap, towels, or blankets to protect your items. Please double tape your heavier boxes. Please avoid packing any liquids (laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, shampoo, liquid soap, bottled water, etc.) as these items can be purchased at school. Do not leave any dead space in the box, as this can cause crushing. Use something to fill in any extra space on top of the box. [ Back to top]
14. What if I need more than the 6 boxes that come in the moving kit?
Don't worry. You can either purchase additional kits from us, or the less expensive way is to use an empty box you have laying around the house, go to a local UPS store, or try a grocery store. When you go through the checkout process, you will have to enter the dimensions of any boxes that are not supplied by College Movers. You should try and get boxes that are not too much larger than ours. The dimensional weight of bigger boxes will make your shipping charges more expensive even if the weight of those boxes are low. [ Back to top]
15. How should I determine the weight of each box?
Since the average person does not have a shipping scale in their house, the next best thing would be to use a bathroom scale. If you do not have one, you should try and estimate your best. Please note, you will be charged for any boxes that are under-weighed. [ Back to top]
16. What if my box weighs more than what I enter during checkout?
You will be charged after shipping for any additional weight that is not recorded properly during checkout. [ Back to top]
17. What is the average weight of a box sent to college?
Each person has different amounts of different items when going to school. That being said, the averages that we have seen over the years is right around 25 pounds. [ Back to top]
18. What is insured and can I purchase more insurance?
Each box is insured up to $100. Additional insurance can be purchased for $2.50/$100 of insurance. [ Back to top]
19. Can I use my own UPS account to send my boxes with College Movers?
We do not allow 3rd party accounts when using our services. [ Back to top]
20. Do I need to bring the boxes to a UPS facility or to my room myself?
No. That is why we do what we do...all you have to do is pack and unpack. When it is time for you to come back to your account and print the UPS labels, you will let us know when you want your boxes to be picked up. All you have to do is put the boxes outside (if you will not be home), and UPS will come and pick them up. [ Back to top]
21. When should I have UPS pickup my boxes?
Depending on where you live in the country, you want to give around 3-5 days for your boxes to arrive at school. If you are running late, we offer different levels of services from UPS (i.e., Next Day, 2-Day, etc.). These services are extremely expensive, so please plan accordingly. [ Back to top]
22. How are the shipping charges determined?
UPS determines the charges by the size of the box as well as the weight. The bigger the box the more the cost to ship it. Our boxes are set where you can pack up to 34 pounds before being charged for additional weight. [ Back to top]
23. What should I do once I get to school on move in day?
The process for receiving boxes is different at each school. Sometimes we are given early access, and the boxes will be waiting for you in your room. If the location you live at does not allow us early access, please call the office when you arrive at school. We will also send out text messages to make you aware that we are on campus and making deliveries or pick-ups. Please be patient...there are a lot of students moving in, and please be courteous to our work people. [ Back to top]
24. Can I tip the guys when my items are picked up and/or delivered at school?
While tipping is by no means mandatory, our drivers still need to pay for college and it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that there is no set amount for tipping, so please use your own discretion. [ Back to top]
25. Can I reuse my boxes for future moves?
Absolutely! We constantly try to do our part with being environmentally friendly. We do not store the empty boxes, but if you want to save the boxes, you will avoid paying for them again for future moves. We do ask that you purchase more boxes once the originals become worn down. Any damaged items that packed in old boxes are not covered by UPS. [ Back to top]
